To all of you who travel and have to eat I salute you! For I am one of you and am sympathetic. The kind of work I do causes me to have to eat at places I would rather not! And because I loooove to cook and create food it is sometimes very sad the things I have to put in mouth to just get by.
But in my travels through this great land of ours I have been able to work out a few details and can manage to eat a little better on the road.
First in my own suite case I pack very important things like...
Salt and pepper, red pepper flakes, A microwavable bowl, knife, fork, spoon, corkscrew, ground coffee (I am lucky I have a roaster right here in my own town) 4 cup coffee filters, your own coffee mug(travel kind of coarse),small can opener, and tea's. Now all these items seem simple but have saved me.
What they call coffee in your hotel is I think something they have dug up in some ancient Indian ruin or something. Oh the bitterness of it sends chills up my spine. Waking up in a strange hotel and city is bad enough but doing that with some strange coffee in your cup is enough to make you get back on that plane and go home! I always have my own coffee and it makes getting up so much better. And having your tea is a nice one too. I usually use the coffee maker to do that. I just make coffee without the coffee. I know it is not boiling but it works. And then also hopefully the lobby of your hotel has hot water along side the ancient ruined coffee.
Now when it comes to meals, ask around a lot. But be careful I have asked the wrong person and been disappointed. Mexican food with plastic cheese (processed) is so nasty to me. Argh is all I can say.
One thing I do recommend especially if you plan to spend a week or more in one place is get a hotel with a fridge in your room and a microwave (you can request these things these days).
I like to find a specialty market if I can, a lot of healthy super markets have great deli's in them. But if you can not find one a big super market will do.
I always buy fresh salad stuff and dressing. So If I do go through fast food I will only get a sandwich or a baked potato and make myself a salad when I get back to my room.
Now I understand this is not always practical. And I have been stuck in towns where there was only a burger joint and a market. No fridge in the room. But normally a lobby of a hotel does have a microwave. And there are so many things you can do with a microwave.
I am not going to continue for now and just see who might be interested in what I have to say. I would like to write about some of the most amazing restaurants I have found in the most unlikely spots in our country. And other tips on traveling eating that I have learned.
maybe I can make your life a little easier on the road cause it can be tough!
Your truly,
The Roaming Foam
